Explore the Pros and Cons of Barefoot Running Sandals

Barefoot Running sandals like Luna Sandals and Xero Shoes have grown in popularity among natural running enthusiasts. Inspired by indigenous footwear and minimalist design, these sandals provide a close-to-barefoot experience without going completely bare.

Advantages of wearing Barefoot running Sandals

  • Natural Foot Movement: Sandals allow your foot to flex, splay, and engage naturally with the ground.

  • Lightweight and Breathable: Your feet stay cool and dry, reducing the chance of blisters or overheating.

  • Improved Form: Minimal cushioning promotes better posture and midfoot striking.

  • Versatility: Great for roads, trails, and even daily casual wear.

  • Strengthens Foot Muscles: Like barefoot running, they challenge and develop the intrinsic foot muscles.

Disadvantages and Considerations

  • Less Protection: Thin soles mean sharp rocks and debris are more noticeable.

  • Strap Irritation: Toe posts or ankle straps can cause rubbing or blisters during longer runs.

  • Requires Adaptation: Just like barefoot running, you need to transition slowly.

  • Not Ideal for All Terrain: Mud, cold, or technical trails may be less enjoyable.

But Luna or Xero?

Well both brands have amazing footwear, I use the Xero Z-Trail EV for a more casual occasion, even though they are very capable barefoot running sandals and I have logged some 15km hard trail runs the "huarache" style allows you to get away with sandals on that family brunch or that sunday stroll in town.

Now the Luna Mono winged edition are a complete beast, they are"sandal style" stick to your foot like velcro, have a thicker sole for those really rough and long hiking or running days, they have more striking colors and I'm sure they can take you to the end of the world.

Final Thoughts

Running in sandals is a liberating and fun way to connect with the ground just be smart, transition slowly, and choose routes that match your comfort level, have fun with it and little by little you will notice the benefits of liberating your feet!
